Front Yard Landscaping in Rochester, MN, Planned for Winter

Give your home a front yard that looks cared for in every season, with healthy planting beds, natural stone and a clear path to the front door.

Front Yard Landscaping That Fits Your Home

Your front yard is the first thing people see and the part of your property you walk through every day. Peters’ Patio and Landscape plans and installs front yard landscaping for homeowners in Rochester and across southern Minnesota, from a simple bed refresh to a full renovation with a new entry walk. A typical project can include shrub and perennial beds, landscape rock or mulch, boulders, edging, a paver entry walk and steps up to the door. It is one part of our general landscaping services.

A lot of front yards around Rochester were planted when the house was built and never touched again. The shrubs have grown over the windows, the beds have sunk below the lawn, and the plastic edging has heaved out of the ground. We start by deciding what is worth keeping. A healthy mature shrub or tree can anchor a new design, while overgrown foundation plantings usually come out so the house can be seen again.

We plan the beds around what your front yard actually deals with. That means checking sun and shade on each side of the house, choosing shrubs and perennials that handle Minnesota winters, and keeping plants back from the driveway and sidewalk where snow gets piled. Salt spray from the street and the driveway burns many evergreens, so we use tougher plants or rock along those edges and save the softer plants for spots that stay clear.

Grading matters as much as plants. Soil should slope away from the foundation so spring melt and summer storms drain toward the lawn instead of the basement. When we rebuild front beds we set that slope first, then add the edging, soil, plants and ground cover on top of it.

How a Front Yard Project Comes Together

Most projects start with a walk around the property to talk about how you use the front yard, what you want to keep and what has to go. Then we put together a plan with the layout, plants and materials so you can see the whole yard before any work starts. If your project is larger, our design team can take it further with a full landscape plan.

Before we dig, Minnesota law requires the contractor to contact Gopher State One Call so buried gas, power and cable lines get marked, and that is our job, not yours. Front yards hold most of a home’s utility lines, so this step matters more here than anywhere else on the property.

On build days we take out tired shrubs and overgrown beds, fix grading where it is needed, and build the new layout with fresh soil, plants, rock or mulch and edging. When the plan includes a front walk, steps or a sitting wall, we build the hardscape first so the plantings go in last and stay clean. One homeowner described their project this way: “Darren and Crew did an excellent job replacing sidewalk, steps and included a sitting wall and patio to our front entrance.”
