Planting Beds in Rochester, MN, With Hardy Plants

New planting beds with healthy shrubs, perennials and grasses add color and structure to your yard without a lot of upkeep.

Shrub and Perennial Bed Installation

Peters’ Patio and Landscape installs new planting beds and renovates old ones for homeowners in Rochester and across southern Minnesota. A bed can wrap the foundation, line a front walk, ring a tree or fill a corner of the lawn. We remove the sod and weeds, loosen and amend the soil, set the plants at the right depth, and finish with edging and a ground cover of mulch or landscape rock. If your beds are part of a bigger change, our front yard landscaping work brings beds, stone and entry walks together in one plan.

Plant choice matters as much as the install. We pick shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses that are hardy in southern Minnesota, sized so they won’t swallow a window or crowd a sidewalk in a few years, and placed for the sun and shade each spot gets. Ornamental grasses and shrubs with colored stems or berries keep a bed interesting through the winter, when most of the yard is brown or under snow.

Edging is what keeps a bed looking sharp. We install edging that holds its line through frost, so rock and mulch stay in the bed and grass stays out of it. Options include steel, stone or paver borders, and bullet edging, a rounded concrete curb that also gives the mower a clean edge to follow.

If you are weighing mulch or landscape rock, we will walk you through how each one looks, holds moisture and handles weeds in your yard. Mulch feeds the soil and keeps roots cool, so it suits perennial beds. Rock lasts for years and stands up to snow piles and salt, so it suits the edges along a driveway.

Beds Planned for Drainage and Winter

A planting bed should move water away from your home, never hold it against the foundation. We grade the soil so it falls away from the house, plan around downspouts, and use edging that keeps rock or mulch in place through heavy rain and spring melt. Next to driveways and sidewalks we leave room for snow and choose plants that put up with salt.

New plants need regular water while their roots grow out. The University of Minnesota Extension advises watering new shrubs every day for the first one to two weeks, then every two to three days for about twelve weeks, then weekly until they are established. We go over a watering plan for your beds when the planting is done, and spring and early fall are the easiest times to get new beds going.

Planting beds are one of our general landscaping services, so we can also handle rock, drainage and other work in the same project.
